  WHAT IS CAPOEIRA?

Capoeira is one of the most facinating aspects of Brazilian culture. It is a synthesis of dance, fight and game.

Capoeira is a martial art.

Capoeira is life.

Capoeira is death.

Capoeira is a jewel that has been hewn from the Brazilian culture, a rough diamond that has been cut and polished by countless lives over countless years.

It is a form of exercise, a fast and exciting sport, a fighting dance, self defence and a game of stragety and survival.

This multi-facet is many things to many different people. Its composite parts have been woven together to produce something wholly unique, the Brazilian martial art of CAPOEIRA.

The main thrust in capoeira today is towards the Jogo. It is in this expression of fight/game that the true capoerist confronts himself as well as his opponent. The intensity, speed and structure of this fight/game is dictated by a musical instrument called the Berimbau.

The Berimbau is the one stringed musical instrument that controls the Roda de Capoeira. Moving slowly to the music of Angola the capoerist moves into postures of trap and attack, sincerity and deceitfulness, mirroring life in all its many moods. As the tempo increases so the game opens up. The spirit of the fight expands it. The fight making itself more evident through the powerful kicks and throws that are used from every conceivable angle, and at tremendous speeds.
